NELLO SPAZIO FA FREDDO/ IT’S COLD IN SPACE is an open multimedia project, currently under construction, investigating the form of the hollow half sphere as a primary symbolic structure of human life at a biological, cosmological, sociological and historical level.
Inspired by the igloo homes – masonry structures built in the Milan district of "La Maggiolina" in the 1940s – we noted that their shape suggested various layers of uses and meanings by making a visual journey which emerges in our mind map.
For example: house and shelter – a safe place where life protects itself from danger, but also finds and preserves itself (igloo, cavern, hut, tent, home); a place of germination and gestation (seed, hull, womb, shell); a shape of ritual celebrations (cavern, pantheon) or representations (snow ball); a place suitable for life in general (the celestial vault rotating above the ground where life unfolds, the union of circle and square, the cosmos as in order – harmonious union of movement and stasis); a place where life is rescued as matter and stored as information (reversed half sphere/ark as a record of the living and an encyclopedia of the organic, skull, brain), or sent in the form of seed/information to alien civilizations or towards the unknown (ship/space ark, pioneer) and so on.
The project already features the contribution of a large group of invited artists and is open to any contributor wishing to collaborate. The intention is to proceed by accumulation and expansion in many directions: artistic, documental, intellectual, ludic. The result is a living map/open multimedia archive (again, imagined like a shelter and a time capsule) ramifying in connections and morphological, conceptual, emotional and aesthetic analogies.
